When Is the Right Time to See the Wildebeest?
Nothing prepares you for the scale of the wildebeest migration. Around 1.5 million wildebeest, joined by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, circle the ecosystem throughout the year in search of fresh grass. Timing is everything, and that is where we come in handy.
Our Serengeti great migration tours follow the herds rather than the calendar. From January to March, we base you on the southern plains near Ndutu, where thousands of calves are born within weeks. In April and May, the herds stream north through the central and western corridors.
From June to October, we head north for the dramatic Mara River crossings, where crocodiles wait underneath the banks. During November and December, the herds drift south again with the short rains. Our safari guides share daily field reports so that we can adjust your camp location at short notice to keep you close to the action.
What Happens Between Sunrise and Sundowner?
Havillah Tours start early, when the light is soft, and the predators are active. After a hot breakfast, we spend the morning on a game drive, return to camp for lunch and a rest through the midday heat, and head out again in the afternoon, often finishing with a sundowner overlooking the plains.
